William Pike

Yesterday William Pike came in to our classroom to talk about the challenge! http://williampike.co.nz/ that's his website!

He  told us the story and it went like this, Just after dark one evening on Mt. Ruapehu, William Pike was about to doze off to sleep when 1.5million cubic meters of mud, water and rocks erupted from the mount. Crushed and critically injured, his partner had no option but to leave him for help. What followed was to be one of NZ’s most dramatic alpine rescues, and an epic story of a man’s will to survive in an inhospitable environment. He became critically hypothermic and doctors and rescue authorities noted his survival as ‘a miracle ‘. Among other life threatening injuries, his right leg was amputated below the knee.

That's a picture of him!

  1. Kia Ora Lucy, my name is Kyra and I go to Grey Main School.

I like your blog post about William Pike because you have explained what happened to him and how he was amputated on his right leg. I also like how you have put a clear photo in the post. Have you ever been tramping or hiking before? I haven't, but some of my friends have.

This reminds me of hiking and what the dangers of it is. If I ever go hiking or tramping I will make sure I have all the correct safety things. What is your favorite outdoor things to do? Mine is to go on geographical walks like caves, beaches and rivers.

Maybe next time you could say what you most enjoyed about William Pike. Was it just listening to him in person or was it something else? Is there any outdoor person that you would like to meet personally? I would love to meet David Attenborough, my inspiration for geography and research of animals. My dad has also inspired me a lot!

    Great post,
    Kyra, Grey Main School!
